Exclusive Interview With BURY YOUR DEAD Vocalist, MAT BRUSO!!

HeadbangHere.net had a quick chat with legendary frontman Mat Bruso and his epic return to BURY YOUR DEAD during a quick bowling session at The Magic Stick. Based on his enthusiastic manner and excitement on his return this made it to be quite the funny interview. Check out what he has to say about Mosh ‘n’ Roll, touring, and his teaching job between tours!

HeadbangHere.net: How are things going lately with Bury Your Dead?
Mat Bruso (BURY YOUR DEAD – vocals): For everybody it’s been going fucking awesome and we are all having a great time.
HeadbangHere.net: Can you tell us a little about the switch from Victory Records to Mediaskare Records?

MB: I haven’t been in the band for the past couple years and not sure exactly how it went down. I know we were all real excited to work with Baron and Mediaskare and put out a record with that guy. The biggest part of that switch was getting me back it’s been going great, we recorded the new record, everyone has been really supportive, we are on this headlining tour with a whole bunch of other Mediaskare bands and others from different record labels. It’s really been tremendous so far, everybody has been going hard and having a lot of fun.
HeadbangHere.net: After the departure of Myke Terry and the return of Mat Bruso, how did that have an impact on the fans and yourselves?

MB: Kids seem really fucking excited to have me back. When they first asked me I didn’t know if people would be into it, you know a lot of people moved on and everybody was really digging with Myke had going on for good reason too because I was unwilling to do it. Myke continued to bring mosh to everywhere and show kids a good time. The pleasure was all mine getting to come back and so far the response has been fucking awesome. It’s really, really flattering to go around and have people so excited to have me back. I mean I’m super fucking out of shape, like I’m totally fat, winded all the time but the energy and the vibe, violence, and positivity coming together is such a dream come true.

(Sidenote: Mat asked me to include that he bowled a Turkey during this question, it was impressive.)
HeadbangHere.net: Who is producing the new album and why them?

MB: Shane at The Brick Hithouse, we recorded the new record already and did all the mixing for it, his buddy Pete did all the vocal levels and stuff. We chose the Brick Hithouse because Shane is the fucking man, he did the last record, and he’s done a lot of work with The Ghost Inside and a bunch of other bands. He’s so good at making bands sound way bigger and heavy as balls. He makes your band sound like you spent way more money then what you actually did. So Shane everytime!
HeadbangHere.net: Each album has helped define your sound over your careers, what can we expect from the new album Mosh n Roll?

MB: A lot of people as built it up as the return to Bury Your Dead’s roots. I don’t know if it’s a return to Bury Your Dead’s roots, that first demo that they put out with Joe Krewko and Mark singing on it is one of my favorite things I’ve listened to my whole life. When I first got to sing with Bury You Dead, I was defiantly singing with my favorite band ever, and it’s not necessarily bad, it’s the same vibe. I would say it’s comfortable between Cover Your Tracks and Beauty And The Breakdown. We are fucking super proud of it, straight up heavy parts and two-step parts, it’s just like any other record. It was written to be played live, when you listen to it, it’s cool it’s great to sing along with the words, but it’s written to be played live so we can slow it the fuck down, speed it up, and have people just smash each other. It’s not necessarily a defining moment, I’m super proud to be a part of it and to be back. For me it’s another time for me to say any fucked up thing I want to.
HeadbangHere.net: After you’re done touring here in the US you have another tour in Europe. What’s next after all the touring?

MB: I go back to teaching. I went overseas to one show a week ago for Ghostfest and it was a dream come true, it was fucking awesome. There were 3,000 kids there; it was a great time, a great welcome back to the band. I’m really excited to go overseas because all my friends go overseas, it seems like every band and their mom go overseas and I never got to do it so I’m super excited. When we come back school starts and I go back to the 6th grade. Snow days are show days, any time I have off work we are going to try to schedule some stuff. Christmas break I’d like to go out on a mini tour, Spring break do another run, basically whenever we can do a show.
HeadbangHere.net: Will we ever see another live CD/DVD like Alive again?

MB: I don’t know, I’d hate to commit to anything. We haven’t really talked about doing something like that yet. I’d love to do that, I’d love to do it at The Chain Reaction again, I love that fucking venue. I’d love to do another live DVD because all these shows have been fucking great. You know some random footage from these shows on cell phones have surfaced on the Internet and people really seem to be going off but we haven’t really been talking about it yet.
HeadbangHere.net: Are there any extras on the new album such as featured guest artists?

MB: Nope, I enjoy doing guest vocals and when bands ask to do it I always try so say “Yeah,” but in my experience we were never really big into having guest vocal spots, not really for a particular reason and we never really done that. So there isn’t really any big guest vocal spots on there, I can tell you “Bury Your Fucking Dead,” is on there again, rerecorded, it’s fucking good times.

Check out BURY YOUR DEAD’s new song “Slaughterhouse Five”, off of their 2011 Mediaskare release, Mosh N’ Roll.  This song is so fucking badass!  This is definitely the comeback of 2011.
